Background – the early days

The LRA story began with the discovery of the limitations that political structure put on local government. This came to a head in 1980, and LRA's early history runs remarkably parallel to events surfacing across the nation during the 1980s and 1990s. The potted history below is dedicated to the founders, workers, ordinary members, and even our sometime critics -to everyone has played a part in the growth of LRA.

1981 LRA's newsletter first published and distributed 1981 LRA starts campaigning for a Town Council for Loughton, and for a children’s playground. 1980 Developing Loughton published and distributed to oppose supermarket development 1980 LRA planning applications monitoring system set up
And for interest, many decades before the Loughton Residents Association, there was a Loughton Ratepayers Association.
